Jews & Land: A Study Group
As millenia old tradition, Judaism and Jewish culture gifts us with nuanced and nourishing ways of relating to land and earth. We’ll study Biblical and Rabbinic texts about land, explore Jewish relationships to land, and reflect on how Jewishness shapes our relationship to land today. Through text study, song, and exploring the land we inhabit, we will explore questions such as:
- How can Jewish tradition support us in deepening our connections to land in the context of climate catastrophe?
- How do we foster spiritual awakening to the lands we are on?
- How can Jewish relationships to land strengthen and empower organizing for Indigenous landback and sovereignty?
- What do we want Jewish relationships to land to look and feel like in the coming times?
We will reflect on our own relationships to land and place, and experiment with spiritual practices to deepen our awareness of and connection to earth and land.
We will gather at Hidden Falls Regional Park, September 30, October 7th and 14th.
We will begin our exploration during the land based harvest holiday of Sukkot, and meet on shabbat evenings, from 4-6pm, for seduah shlishit, the traditional third meal of shabbat.
Classes will meet in person, outdoors. In honor of shabbat, we request that people not use electronic devices. Minimum registrations to run the course this fall is 10 people.
